Swallowing Therapy
Dysphagia is the medical term typically used to describe difficulty
with chewing and swallowing. Swallowing therapy is a very specific
type of therapy designed around your specific difficulties. The
purpose of swallowing therapy may range from improving your
efficiency with chewing to protecting your airway while you
swallow to decrease your risk of aspiration.
Swallowing difficulties may occur for many reasons. These may include:
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury
- Head and Neck Cancer
- Tempromandibular Disorder (TMJ trouble)
- weakness
- COPD
- Sleep Apnea

I strive to determine the reason you
are having trouble and use that
information to treat you as a whole
human. To accomplish this, I will
analyze the information provided
by instrumental assessments, review
your past and current medical history,
and create a plan of care to incorporate
a variety of exercises and compensatory
strategies. When it comes to swallowing
exercise, the use of appropriate
techniques and a variety of feedback
types are of utmost importance to
ensure you achieve the most benefit
for all of your hard work. Continued
use of these exercises and strategies
will amplify the benefit of your
swallowing treatment and help
you achieve your goals faster.
Sometimes, your difficulty with swallowing
doesn’t stem from your brain, mouth, or throat.
If this appears to be the case, I will refer you to
the appropriate healthcare provider.

If you have not had an instrumental swallow evaluation (you may have heard the terms swallow study, modified barium swallow study, MBS, video swallow study, FEES, or several other terms to describe this), I may recommend you have one completed. These studies are beneficial in ensuring that I know how your body uses your swallowing mechanism and that I am able to provide you with the most appropriate and specific treatments possible. As I say to many of my clients, “ I wish I had x-ray vision, but no one will give it to me.”
While swallowing is complicated, I strive to make your treatment easy to understand. Please don’t feel overwhelmed. We will work through this together.
